Best Ways to deal with Debt Collectors

A Needless Annoyance

Getting into debt these days is not difficult. Loan defaults are a habit among the most frugal of us. People can find it difficult to get out of the mess, while one can sympathize with the position they are in. It is not enough to have the stress of the debt without the annoyance of debt collectors harassing you day and night. Their only job is to collect money owed by debtors. Though they sound human, they appear tough and uncaring, with no signs whatsoever of sympathy. As they are human too, they face frustrations of people while getting frustrated themselves. Is there any way that major problems can be avoided by handling these interactions effectively?

Debt Collection is Big Business

Debt collection is a lucrative business. They want to get the money you owe on a debt that the original creditor sold them for a larger profit. Collection agencies want the money involved, and will do anything they can, legally speaking, to collect any past due money. Their livelihood depends on the collections they are able to make, and will try and do everything to annoy a debtor and make him pay the debt. After you do not pay your debt on time, you may find yourself fending off regular phone calls or threatened with legal action. Collectors are only supposed to do what is allowed by law to collect on a debt. You have the same type of laws your creditors do, protecting your interests.

Do Not Panic

Most debtors panic when they start receiving calls from a collection agency, which is what they should never do. The collection agency must give written verification of the creditor to the debtor if he demands it. It is within your legal right to dispute the amount of money they say you owe. Write a letter outlining your concerns, including disputes for amount owed, settlement options, or whether you can dispute any offers made. Work phone calls is one tactic that collection agencies love using. If you are receiving calls at work or at home from collectors before 8 AM or after 9 PM, they are behaving illegally. Retain any proof of delivery of letters you send them to stop them from harassing you. Your debt is still there, waiting to be paid off, but now they cannot call you about it anymore.

Credit Counseling Service

One last option is to go to a credit counseling agency to settle your debts without going to court. Wage garnishment is only enforceable by the courts, so do not listen to collectors who threaten this. If they do this, report the agency for harassment. Your debt is still there, of which there is no doubt. The self destruct button is not an option, and you must create a plan to get yourself out of this mess.
